I did a major retreat from fandom in 2019 for real life reasons and just hesitancy about where to go next. It was a shock of reality when I realized three weeks ago that I hadn't written a single fic this year. With a boost of support from Omi I decided to finish the last chapter of Firebond, the Harry/Draco fic that I started in 2012 and walked away from in 2015. It has truly been a weight on me, knowing that it was so close to being finished and not quite managing to do it. So 11,300 words later, Firebond is NO LONGER A WIP and it is a crazy good feeling.

Here is to hoping that 2020 brings inspiration for new stories and fics. I feel I need a new fandom but not sure where to turn to find it.

I was tagged by @carpemermaidtales on Tumblr in the first line meme. Kind of excited to do this again -- I haven’t done a first lines retrospective in a while...this should be interesting. Here goes nothing:

Sam stood under the spray of hot water, arms braced against the shower wall as he mentally replayed what had happened on his run.  (Connections - Sam/Steve)

Draco cautiously pulled Lucas's bedroom door closed. (Sea Glass - Draco/Harry)

"Beck to sleeping quarters, STAT." (Trip Home - Chris/Mark)

It was Christmas but there was no joy aboard the Hermes. (Marry Christmas, Mark - Chris/Mark)

"You are stark raving." Albus blinked at Scorpius. (Night Out - Albus/Scorpius with a side of Draco/Harry)

There was someone in his bed. (Starting Over - Charlie/Harry)

His heart still racing from the last hill they'd pedaled up, Mark pulled off his bicycle helmet and ran his fingers through his matted hair.  (Newton’s Second Law and Other Forces of Nature - Chris/Mark)

The rasp of metal against metal woke Mark with a jerk. (Rain - Chris/Mark)

Draco hated the blue and gold tile pattern of the third floor of St Mungo's.  (Solder - Draco/Harry)

Harry stared at Slughorn in disbelief, "Malfoy? Why not Hermione? I can't -"  (Firebond - Draco/Harry)

Johanssen's voice was muffled, Chris barely heard it through the beat of the Rolling Stones in his headphones.  (Without Him - Chris/Mark)

At last, the Hermes repressurized and gravity was restored. (Homeward Bound - Chris/Mark)

"Dad, they are here." My son, M.J., stood in the doorway of the kitchen. (Watney Out - Chris/Mark)

The five words were swirling through my head as I went into freefall, plummeting through space, fighting for the ability to breathe. (Million Miles Away - Chris/Mark)

I slammed down on the brake pedal of the hired Jaguar, skidding to a stop as the recorded voice told me to turn right, which would have been fine except there was no paved road. (Unexpected Turn - Draco/Harry)

Steve jerked awake, the echo of a scream still ringing in his ears. (Taps - Steve Rogers gen fic)

The beech tree was perfectly situated to catch a bit of breeze coming off the lake and still provide sufficient shade from the April sunshine, which seemed determined to force the last dregs of winter away. (New Path - Harry/Draco)

Ginny shouldn't have noticed it at all.  (At Second Glance - Harry/Ron)

Harry shifted uncomfortably on the wooden chair, grimacing as needles of pain shot through his left leg.  (Bedside Manner - Harry/Charlie)

“Harry.” The urgency in Ron’s voice barely penetrated the fog of Monday morning paperwork. (Secrets Revealed - Harry/Draco)

-
It is interesting...seeing how I open stories, and I think it has changed a bit. I tend to open with an action, (might even be considered a pre-cliffhanger). And I’m dabbling a lot more with first person. I don’t think any of my early stories were first person.

Please note if you click through that several of these stories deal with Major Character Death, other pairings, and potential triggers. Read the warnings on the AO3 descriptions.

AND I’ve gotten much more diverse with my pairings and fandoms - YAY!

Consider yourself tagged!

In a lovely change from the last few months, I've been writing WORDS! Truly excited to be creating again. Last month I wrote two stories - a Harry/Draco pinch-hit for Remix and a Sam/Steve (Avengers) story that I've been wanting to write for ages!

Sea Stones (Harry/Draco)
This is a remix of Persephoneapple's lovely and heartbreaking Secret of the Sea. Be sure to read her original because she tells a wonderful story of recovery from loss.

A03 Link - 2,400 word count - Rating: G - Major character death & Mpreg & Kidfic
When death comes unexpectedly the lives of loved ones are torn apart until the healing slowly begins.

Connections (Sam/Steve)
This is my only second story set in the Avengers fandom. This one, like the previous one (Taps) is set in the Captain America: The Winter Solider timeline. I'm fairly obsessed with a melancholy Steve trying to adapt to a new century. In Connections, Sam reaches out and a friendship begins.

AO3 Link - 9,600 word count - Rating G - R
eferences to past Steve/Bucky; Sam/Riley
Sam Wilson’s brief encounter with Steve Rogers on the Capitol Mall leads to an unexpected friendship. Sam hopes that there might be a chance for more, but someone from Steve’s past is standing in the way.

Oh! And Snowgall wrote me a WONDERFUL reimix of a tiny little drabble I did ages ago for a comment fest! I LOVE her story - it matches my style so wonderfully and I can't believe it is only her second story ever!. Go read it! - Bite Your Tongue. If you want to read my original (which I'd completely forgotten about, it is here.)

When I started writing Martian fics they were to simply extend the story, I needed to find out what happened to Mark after he got aboard the Hermes. Coincidentally this is the same way I started writing six years ago when I couldn't accept that the ending of Harry Potter was the end. I wrote a 25K story that 'finished' it for myself. Then I discovered what I'd done actually had a name: 'fan fiction' and I plunged down a rabbit hole of discovery.

Anyway, I accidentally created a story arc without realizing it--six of my seven Martian stories actually fit together fairly nicely. There are minor little differences in some backstory/details presented so I'm not going to officially link them. They can  be read separately, but if you want to read them in order:

1) Without You
2) Marry Christmas, Mark
3) Million Miles Away
4) Homeward Bound
5) The Trip Home (new fic)
6) CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE ENDING: if you love fluff read: Newton's Second Law; if you like angsty endings read: Rain (read warnings MC death).

Title: The Trip Home
Fandom: Martian (Weir)
Pairings: Mark Watney/Chris Beck
Word Count: 10K
Summary: Mark and the crew are finally on the journey home to Earth but Mark is still being affected by his lengthy stay on Mars. Chris is torn between the need to be Mark's partner and his doctor.

I'm still hugging myself because of this beautiful art that [personal profile] anemonen created for me! During the Snowflake Challenge I had commented that one fandom gift I would love to receive is art inspired by one of my stories. Anemonen saw my request and created this BEAUTIFUL drawing from a scene in Unexpected Turn! Everything about it is so wonderful! The way Draco is gently grasping Harry's face, Harry's hair! She captured so many details from the story! It is just wonderful - please go to her page and shower her with love!

Today's challenge:In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix...

Today's was easy and lovely because @capitu's Day Six fandom request was for dialogue-only drabbles so I get to fulfill her request while filling my day seven challenge! Just a little Harry/Draco interaction. 200 words.

Day 06: In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Gosh...fannish wishlist. First thing that comes to mind is art inspired by Twist of Fate...or Unexpected Turn...or heck, any of my stories. And second, I would really, really like to figure out where the recent rec is located for three of my really old stories that had a HUGE surge in activity on fanfiction.net last month. Morning After, Black Island and Realisation just SURGED in views and I have no idea why. Just those three, and just on FF so it is really weird and I'd love to know *why*

That's it. Can't think of a third one.
JUST THOUGHT OF A THIRD! Scrolling through the requests of others made  on the Snowflake Challenge posting for today made me think of a third, some new icons to use. I'm pretty much a default icon kind a person but it would be fun to have some different ones for my fandoms (HP, Martian, Capt America).
oakstone730: (Default)

I'm wandering through my WiPs folder there are things I have absolute no memory writing....

"Steve Christmas" -- this is all that is in this story? I guess I just stopped? I have no idea where I was going with it. Vaguely I think it was going to be about the difference between Christmas in the 1930s vs 2010s (lead tinsel, lights, etc)

The tree was crooked. Steve tilted his head and squinted. It was still crooked.

“I’m 94 years old and still can’t get a Christmas tree in its stand.” Steve mutters to himself as he tries to adjust the trunk in the tree stand, tightening the bolts, remembering at the last minute not to use too much force.

Then There is this one that is just named "Random Sex Description"

MA sexy times )

And then there's this random Harry/Draco snip  [can't get DW cut to work on this... I think because of the quote marks? GRRR]

“I can see you skulking over there by the maps, Potter. What are you doing here?”

The rolled up map that Harry had been pretending to look at fell to the floor as he jerked around to see Draco glaring at him from atop a ladder on the other side of the bookshop. Draco had been busy filing books on the upper level shelves, Harry hadn’t thought he could be seen.

“Pick that up, and put it back.” Draco said as he started down ladder. Harry picked up the map and fumbled it. “Careful, Potter. That’s a one of a kind map. What are you doing here? Don’t you have patients to save?”

“Oh, uhm. I was looking for a present for a friend.”

“No, you’re not. Christmas is past and gone and Granger’s birthday isn’t for another eight months.”

Anyway...i just find it funny that there are all these random things. And I haven't even dared to open the file called "Mish Mash of Scenes and Ideas"

Day 5: In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The hardest part of this challenge is to narrow down what to rec...

Jolene by Romaine. 21K
This is one of the stories that stands out from all my fic reading. I love how Romaine created Harry and Draco in this story and they both are strong and intriguing characters. It involves gender-bending pansexual attraction. And is beautiful. Can't see a purple tie without thinking of it.

Summary: Harry comes back from a mandatory holiday and finds that an Auror raid on his favourite establishment could expose his biggest secret. However, another has even more secrets than he does at stake.

Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost by Bsmog. 91K
Summary: Tired of only being the Boy Who Lived, Harry disappears after the war, leaving only a mysterious letter behind. Five years later, Draco and his unlikely friends go on holiday and find magic where there is none and more on a mountain in Africa. EWE.

Beautiful story. I've re-read it several times and have no idea why it doesn't have more hits and comments. It deserves all sorts of adoration. A journey up Mt Kilimanjaro can heal many hurts. Beautiful

Bucky Barnes fanvid by Secretly to Dream. [personal profile] vaysh  rec'd this video a couple of days ago and I'd never watched it before. Just a beautiful job of editing and matching clips to a hauntingly appropriate song.

Today's challenge is to reach out to someone in fandom whom you don't know and either leave a comment or friend request.

Conveniently there is a DW friending meme happening so I scrolled through the posts and commented on someone's post - the only Martian fan I could find! I created a post on the meme, too. Alwasys feel like a dork when I write those, and have gone back three times to edit it to try and sound more interesting than I really am.

2017 Goals:

  • Finish YA manuscript and send pitches to five literary agents
  • Finish Firebond (please someone hold me to this, I need this story to be put to bed)
  • Write sequel to Solder Finish Sam/Steve Fic
  • Finish Chris/Mark Fic

Day Two's Challenge: In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've been mulling this over and at 51 there have been many books/songs/movies/tv shows that have had an impact on my life. But the one(s) that stand out are the Harry Potter books because they changed the trajectory of my life. I hadn't written words for pleasure in years (decades) but reading JKR's work, and re-reading, and listening to the audio, and watching the movies flipped a switch that I haven't been able to turn off. Six years after my first story I've written some 800,000 words. I can't stop thinking, day-dreaming, about ideas and plots and storylines. Both of my own creation and playing with her characters and plotlines. Being in the Harry Potter fandom has also introduced me to some pretty amazing and talented people, opening a whole new world of friendships.

I"m going to attempt the Snowflake Challenge again this year. An attempt to re-invigorate my writing mojo which is at an all-time low. The first challenge is three self-recs - so here we go:

1) Solder -34K / MA - this has been on my mind as Erised has been posting (and I haven't been able to read a single one, yet!). I wrote Solder for[personal profile] tryslora  in 2015 as a Erised pinch hit. It is the last story of any notable length I've written in the past year. I am pleased with how it turned out, especially since it was a story that I had started and abandoned earlier in 2015. As it is a story that involves addiction and recovery, please be sure to read the warnings, however the Solder-Harry & Draco are ever on my mind so I'm setting a goal of writing up a follow-up story to it. One that has been itching to be written as it is comes from Tryslora's original prompt  ("I’d kill to see a collar fic that is also a family fic, showing the two sides of life." -- doesn't that sound magnificent??) but I'm afraid to write it because it will be a challenge to provide the correct balance and nuance to it. But I want to take on this challenge in 2017.

2) Without Him - 4K / PG+? - I've written several Martian fics, the appeal of the psychological and physiological effects of Mark Watney being alone on an entire planet just can't be beat. The heartbreak and angst of being torn apart from a loved one just adds to the appeal of the situation (if you like that thing). Three of my Martian stories can be loosely linked together and I hope in 2017 to finish a longish fic that kind of takes place after this story and Homeward Bound takes place. The 2017 story will neatly sandwich between those and could be followed by Rain (if you like tragic endings) or Newton's Second Law (if you like happy endings)

3) Taps - 2K / PG - My only Captain America story that I've posted, this is just a little scene that I had in my head because when I think about Steve waking up in the 21st century I'm fairly obsessed with how he adapted, those early morning runs, the notebook, the feeling of being out of place and time. So Taps is an attempt to start feeling that out. My self-challenge for 2017 is to finish the Steve/Sam story that I've started and abandoned several times.

First attempt at cross-posting, fingers crossed!

Someone has begun posting Twist of Fate on this Netherlands website.

http://www.quizlet.nl/stories/158962/twist-of-fate–a-drarry-fic/

I’ve posted a comment on the fic asking the person who posted it to take it down, if anyone wants to help support me and post a comment as well, it would be appreciated. The story is posted in English but the site is in Dutch. I was able to use Google Translate to get registered but I don’t see a place to report to the website that they have a plagiarized story posted. If anyone knows Dutch who could help find where do to that would be awesome, too.

I used to check every few months for plagiarizing by googling lines from the stories but have gotten lazy, guess I need to be more diligent. Sigh.

on a totally unrelated note - i updated my masterfic list for the first time in two years! yay me, now i just have to finish firebond.
oakstone730: (page)

Cross-posting from my Tumblr.

The lovely @eidheann tagged me in the five fics meme where you rec five of your own fics. Eep. Instead of rec’ing, I’m commenting on my fics that are most significant to me. I'm sure if I were to do this next month my answers would be a different but these are the one's I picked today.

First one is easy. It’s the one I think I’m known for (I’m Oakstone730, by the way, *waves*), and certainly the most read (holy shit when did it pass 40K views on AO3?), shared, and rec’d: Twist of Fate.

Twist is significant to me in that it was the third or fourth story I wrote and due to its length (300K) I can see my writing evolve and improve from the beginning to the end. I also like it for the way I was able to wrap the canon of the books into a Harry/Draco Hogwarts story.

The Day After: The Missing Chapters from the end of Deathly Hallows would be my second fic that stands out. It was my first story, written in a frenzy in August 2011 before I even knew fanfiction existed, because I had read and re-read Hallows and felt so unsatisfied that I sat down and created my own ending. Full of typos. Harry/Ginny Ron/Hermione

Taps - this is my only Captain America offering, even though I have dozens of ideas floating around in my head, Taps is the only one which has been completed. Kind of completed. I actually have another 10K that I cut from it because I decided that less is more. For me the time just after Steve wakes up in the 21st century is the most evocative. How would it feel to be trapped between the two time periods and trying to move on? It’s a gen fic.

Solder - written as a pinch-hit for Erised. I like this one because it has components of stories that I tried to write several times in the past and couldn’t fit together, until I had to throw together a story in a few weeks and Solder was born. It is typical of my longer fics - combining high angst with fluffy moments. Deals with the difficult subject of addiction and the effects it has on a family - but with a tentative yet still positive ending. Harry/Draco

Smoke and Mirrors - Harry/Charlie. Although I’m known as a Harry/Draco shipper my true OTP is Harry/Charlie. This story is *not* for everyone. It’s BDSM but because I don’t wander too far from my favorite writing style it is also fluffy and angsty. This is one of those stories that asked to be written and I couldn’t stop until it was done.

That’s my five - but just a quick shout out to any Mark Watney/Chris Beck readers (all 4-5 of you...) I do have six Mark/Chris stories of varying degrees of angst, fluff, and death.

oakstone730: (page)
Friday night I posted a prompt challenge on Tumblr and [livejournal.com profile] firethesound sent me #88. Harry/any pairing and “Don’t panic but I think we might have accidentally gotten married…”
YAY ACCIDENTAL MARRIED TROPE!!!

Instead of a fast fic to get my writing juices flowing it turned into 3600 words of I DON'T KNOW WHAT. It is what it is! Read at your own risk

Pairing: H/C
Warning: A bit AU, in just a very small detail off from canon.

(and I've just realized that I'm not even friends with firethesound on LJ, so I've fixed that, OOPS!)

The other stories I posted are here (Mark/Chris (Martian) and Albus/Scorpius with bonus Harry/Draco)

I posted a writing ask meme over on Tumblr and [livejournal.com profile] ani_mage prompted me with # 91 "I remember everything" and the pairing Harry/Draco or Scorpius/Albus. I decided to incorporate both pairings :) (not incesty, just both pairings). At 1,200 words it is a tad (just a tad) longer than a drabble though. AND I can't figure out how to do a damn cut post on Tumblr ([livejournal.com profile] dicta_contrion add that to your Tumblr 101 help!)

Warnings: unbeta'd

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] impishtubist gave me the prompt "I'm dying" for Mark/Chris in the Martian fandom. It is posted here
