A while back I was talking to my sister as she was going through boyfriend-angst, and I chided her, “You can’t keep waiting for Sid Halley to ride in, Dick Francis characters only exist in the books.” It got us both laughing because, yes, we both knew that given the chance we would ride off into the sunset with just about any of the Dick Francis’ main-men.
Growing up in my family, reading was big: vacation planning started by trying to figure out how many books we would need to get where we were going and back again. Our parents never tried to guide our reading, and as a result I moved directly from reading Nancy Drew stories to Dick Francis mysteries by fifth or sixth grade. Books about England and horse racing? A winning exacta.
