Was just digging through my Google Drive and found a folder filled with cut-scenes and plot-bunnies. It included this little scene that I'd written between Charlie and his dad, after Charlie had told his folks he wanted to go to Romania. It is short and sweet (IMHO).

SOMEONE HAS POSTED ON LULU PAPERBACK COPIES OF TWIST OF FATE. WHAT THE FUCKING HELL? Purportedly they have it available in English and French????

I did the takedown notice - but used Oakstone730 instead of my own name so I don't know if this Lulu site will pay attention to it. WHAT DO I DO NEXT? I'm at work and so spitting angry.

UPDATE: got an email from Lulu that they've taken down the content and are reviewing my claim. That should be the end of it since it is clear on the FF.net site when I started posting it, etc. There are other people's stories being sold there though - just search fanfiction. I only recognized one writer (ivyblossom) and have sent her a message.

Here's the reveal list with all the wonderful fics and art - I admit I've only read a few so far. December is just a vague traumatic memory of trying to finish Solder. I'll post a rec list once I've read them. Be sure to take a peek at i[livejournal.com profile] isinuyasha's beautiful "Reading in the Snow" that she gifted me with!

Title: Solder
Author: Anonymous
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] tryslora
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco (mentions of Ron/Hermione; Bill/Fleur; and past Draco/Astoria)
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~35,000
Warnings: EWE, NC17, potion/alcohol addiction and recovery, nipple play, rimming, dirty talk [in hindsight, I don't think it was that dirty, I think I fail at writing dirty, it was more like slightly suggestive]
Content/Enticements: pining, angst, UST, artist!Harry, cursebreaker!Draco, reconciliation, love, forgiveness, did I mention UST?
Summary: Seven years ago, Harry disappeared out of Draco and Scorpius's life without a trace after Harry's addictions destroyed his and Draco's marriage. Now, Harry’s back, and Draco wants to believe he’s changed. But Harry isn’t the only one haunted by the past.
Author's Notes: Tryslora, I was absolutely thrilled (and terrified) at the opportunity to create a gift!fic for you. You have contributed so much to the HP fandom that it was intimidating dreaming of a story worthy of you. I loved your listed likes and prompts (especially the collar fic suggestion, I want to read that story!) and, although I didn’t follow the specific prompts, I hope I hit upon many of your likes.

To my betas, [livejournal.com profile] omi_ohmy and [livejournal.com profile] gracerene: what a tremendous ride these last few days have been. I owe you a debt that I can’t possibly repay. I would still be flailing in an ocean of words if it weren’t for you both. Thank you so much. Post reveal update: I really understated how much Omi and Grace did for this story. This was a pinch-hit that I got at the end of November and the length of the story just exploded as I tried to bring everything together without rushing the plot. Omi and Grace were in the fic editing and giving suggestions as I was still struggling to finish.

For the [livejournal.com profile] hd_writers End of Year Check-In (with slight modifications)

Total Stories Posted:
Total Words Posted: 128,687
Abandonded Words: aprox 90,000
Average Words Per Story: 16,000 (very misleading, some stories were very short)
Shortest Story: Million Miles Away (625 words, Watney/Beck)
Longest: Fest Fic that is still anon.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? I had significant writer's block this year. Took a few months to break out of the mental paralysis I was feeling. What did the trick was writing in new fandoms (!!!) - The Martian and Captain America.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write most? By story count Beck/Watney wins at 4 stories, by word count Harry/Draco wins by tens of thousands of words.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January? Beck/Watney - couldn't quite see the pairing after reading the book the first time but I read it again, multiple times with [livejournal.com profile] impishtubist's goggles on and she showed me the light.

Did you take any writing risks this year? Not really. Other than writing Taps, which I knew wouldn't be popular because there is no pairing, but it is a story that was in my head and I wanted to put on paper. It is Steve Rogers in a cemetery pondering his mortality/life.

Do you have any fanfic or general writing goals for the new year? Finishing my book. I worked on it this year (probably should've counted those words) but am highly dissatisfied with it. Blergh.

From the past year of writing, what was your...

Best story of this year: the fest fic, I think

Most popular story of this year: Well, Firebond with it's single chapter update blew past everything else last week. with 22,000 views across FF and AO3. This is likely due to the fact that it hadn't been updated in 12 months and everyone had to re-read the whole damn thing to remember what story it was.

Personal favorite: Unexpected Turn was one of those stories that had to be written. The words flew onto the page. It was a joy to write (up intil the last section which was tortured and took me months to complete).

Most under-appreciated: Taps - which I expected, but I'd like to take a crack at another Steve fic and see if I can get some readers into it.

Story with the single sexiest moment: I think Unexpected Turn's against-the-tow-truck-sex probably wins, although I actually prefer the sensuality of the shower scene that follows.

Most "holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Nope, pretty much a vanilla year.

Most challenging to write: At Second Glance - a real challenge because it was a Harry/Ron which I never thought I would write and it never quite jelled in my head. It was a fest fic so had to be posted before I felt it was ready.

Biggest disappointment: I really liked all the stories I wrote this year- biggest disappointment is not finishing my book which was this year's goal

Favorite character to write: Draco-I think I've written most of my H/D stories this year from his perspective and it was a refreshing change. I even dabbled in 1st POV!

Favorite opening line: It would be the opening line to the fest fic, but since I can't post that one... The beech tree was perfectly situated to catch a bit of breeze coming off the lake and still provide sufficient shade from the April sunshine, which seemed determined to force the last dregs of winter away. - New Path. My remix of [livejournal.com profile] nicevenn's Abandoned Destinies

Favorite closing lines: There were things that needed to be said, decisions to be made, but for now this was enough. Unexpected Turn

Other favorite lines: The trees were starting to show a hint of color, soon the hills would be brilliant with red and orange leaves. The last time he'd seen a tree in full fall colors had been the previous fall in Italy with Bucky. Seventy years ago. Taps

Goals for 2016: Finishing my book. Writing and submitting a short story. Finishing Firebond.

Okay, I've been feeling a few pangs of guilt because every so often I post on Goodreads a not-complimentary review for published books that I've read. Sometimes I just give them one star but if something is truly awful I've said as much. This is NOT something I would ever do on a fanfiction story. And TBH I never really thought about it until an author 'liked' one of my complimentary reviews of their books - and I had an immediate flash of guilt as I realized it was likely that the other authors whom's books I've panned are likely seeing them.

Should that they are professional published authors change the courtesy that is shown to 'amateur' fanficiton writers?

For the record these are two sample 'bad comments - not horrible but not supportive concrit comments:
I know on Goodreads you can mark your reviews as just viewable to friends, and maybe I should do that, but I like reading other people's comments and so kind of don't want to do it - but I also cringe at the thought of authors reading what I write about their books. Is there a -not viewable by Goodreads authors- setting?

My 11 year old daughter is on her third readiing through of the Harry Potter series and I would like to recommend some gen fics for her to read but I really don't read a lot of them. Any suggestions for age-appropriate fics for her?
oakstone730: (page)

There are some fics that you wish that you could put into a binding and have on your bookshelf so that it is always close to you. Or at very least, have it on your device so that you can re-read your favorite bits again and again.

Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost by [livejournal.com profile] bsmog is one of those fics for me.

If you haven't read it, you should start it tonight. It is a beautiful story set five years after Hogwarts. I was really surprised tonight, as I sat down to re-read it, that it is only 91,000 words - in my head it was twice that long because Bsmog weaves such a beautiful story that pulls you in and makes you fall in love. Harry as mountain guide is wonderful and Draco is the narrator who helps Harry reconnect with Ron and Hermione after disappearing with only a note to say good-bye. The whole thing is set in Tanzania and a climb up Kilimanjaro.

Story Summary: Tired of only being the Boy Who Lived, Harry disappears after the war, leaving only a mysterious letter behind. Five years later, Draco and his unlikely friends [Hermione and Ron] go on holiday and find magic where there is none and more on a mountain in Africa. EWE.

oakstone730: martian, watney (martian)
I've spent the past few weeks writing a smattering of Martian ficlets...after battling weeks (months?) of writer's block it is freeing to explore a new fandom and just get words written again. All are PG, although the angst level is high in a couple, especially Watney Out.

Title: Watney Out - AO3 Link
Warnings: Angst, Alternate Ending AU
Word Count: 2,683
Pairing: Watney/Beck and Beck/Johanssen

Summary: In 2085, the Watney 1 mission is sent by NASA to revisit Acidalia Planitia, fifty years after the emergency evacuation by the Ares 3 crew. Chris Beck was afraid they were going to attempt to bring back Mark's body, the Watney 1 mission however came back with something worse than he could've imagined.

Title: Homeward Bound - AO3 Link
Warnings: none
Word Count: 2,683
Pairing: Watney/Beck

Summary: 557 days after being left on the Mars, Mark Watney is finally back on board the Hermes. Dr. Chris Beck is the first one to see him after the rescue.

Title: Without Him - AO3 Link
Warnings: Angst
Word Count: 4,210
Pairing: Watney/Beck

Summary: Aboard the Hermes Chris Beck struggles to get through each day on the trip back to Earth after Mark was killed. He is managing until an email from Mark's mother brings back reminders of everything he has lost.

Title: Million Miles Away - AO3 Link
Warnings: angst
Word Count: 625
Pairing: Watney/Beck

Summary: Chris Beck's reaction after learning, months after leaving the Martian surface, that Mark Watney was still alive.

Unofficial Martian Timeline: If you are thinking about writing a Martian fic (PLEASE DO, more fics are needed!), I got tired of flipping around in the book trying to find what happened when so I made a GoogleSheet timeline of the events of what happened on Mars, Hermes, and Earth. Feel free to use it. The second tab is a listing of crew information, as given in the book and movie.

And one non-Martian, non-HP ficlet - I can't stop thinking about what it would be like for Steve Rogers after waking up in a changed world - this is my nod to that.

Title: Taps - AO3 Link
Time Period: sometime after Avengers but pre-CA:TWS
Warnings: none? angsty? more contemplative than angsty
Rating: none needed
Word Count: 2,251
Summary: Adapting to the 21st Century isn't as easy as Steve Rogers would like everyone to believe. Sometimes he has to take a step back and remember all that he lost.

Anyone out there? *waves* at [livejournal.com profile] impishtubist, anyone else?

There are a grand total of 33 stories on AO3 for The Martian, 17 of which are Watney/Beck (translated=Matt Damon/ Sebastian Stan for the upcoming movie). It is interesting participating in the birth of a fandom. I've written one story and have a few more in mind. Unlike the Harry Potter fandom where there is a vast universe of resources available to writers, The Martian fandom has nada, that I have found. So I created an Extremely Unofficial Timeline for the events in the Martian, along with corresponding page numbers (US paperback edition). The second tab on the GoogleSheet has the scant information that Weir gives about various characters. Weir does not waste time or words with pesky details like hair or eye color. If you have suggestions/additions for the timeline, please let me know!

If you haven't read The Martian this is a very good three panel summary.

And a movie trailer:

Just posted a short Steve Rogers fic on AO3 - it is more of a meta/gen fic than anything else. I wrote it after watching and rewatching both Captain America films and the Avengers and becoming rather obsessed with how Steve really was adapting to life in the 21st Century. As a daughter of a WWII vet I couldn't help but think of how different his life was to those of his peers.

If you are interested it is here.

p.s. I'm an idiot when it comes to tags/summaries, if you have suggestions for better ones, please let me know.

A nifty box of [livejournal.com profile] leviosa2016 swag was waiting for me when I got back from vacation! And I have no idea why this photo is sideways on LJ when it looks normal on my computer.

There is one thing I still don't feel comfortable about - do I go as the 'real me' or as Oakstone? I'd be intersted in hearing how other people handle their identities at cons. If I go as the real me, I know I'll feel compelled to share my pseud during fandom discussions, etc. then the two things are linked which I don't feel comfortable with - especially since I'm hoping to have my manuscript for my YA novel finsihed soon.

HPFandom and TheHexFiles are looking for volunteers!

The fanfiction archives HPFandom and TheHexFiles are both looking for volunteers to help move fics over to Archive Of Our Own (AO3) using the Open Doors project.

[livejournal.com profile] separatrix, HPF & THF's owner, will not be able to take on this project herself due to health issues so it's up to us fans to come together and move as much as we can in only 3 months before both sites close permanently.

If you are seriously interested in helping out please drop a comment at either [livejournal.com profile] hpfdotnet or [livejournal.com profile] hex_companion and let us know.

Useful links for someone thinking about volunteering:
The Open Doors Special Collections Gallery - Archives saved with Open Doors, where the archives will end up, hopefully.
Importing Works with an Archivist Account - A tutorial of what we'll be doing.

The archives use an early version of eFiction so each chapter has a different ID number so chaptered fics will need to be imported differently than oneshots.
- How do I import a chaptered work? (Up to 100 chapters at a time.)
- How do I import multiple works in one go? (Up to 10 oneshots at a time.)

In an ongoing attempt to avoid writing a difficult scene in my OF story I've been reading some m/m fics. Discovered two great authors: Josh Lanyon and Sean Kennedy

Josh Lanyon has written five books in the Adrien English series It starts with Fatal Shadows. Adrien (with an 'e') owns a L.A.mystery bookstore and when his store assistant and longtime hs friend is murdered, Adrien is the number one suspect in the eyes of homophobic homicide detective Jake Riordan. I also enjoyed his two-fer seres: Fair Game and Fair Play - set in the northwest US/Puget Sound area. Elliot Mills is a forced-out-by-injury former FBI agent who is pulled into a missing person investigation that brings him face to face with his ex.

Sean Kennedy is Australian and his two book series: Tigers & Devils; and Tigerland. AMAZON Description: The most important things in Simon Murray’s life are football [soccer], friends, and film—in that order. His friends despair of him ever meeting someone, but despite his loneliness, Simon is cautious about looking for more. Then his best friends drag him to a party, where he barges into a football conversation and ends up defending the honour of star forward Declan Tyler—unaware that the athlete is present. In that first awkward meeting, neither man has any idea they will change each other's lives forever. I really liked Simon and Declan as characters - sassy and funny and believable. There is also a great cast of support characters. All the smut is off-stage. There is a lot of Australian slang that I really liked trying to interpret.
