...aka: MARK DOESN'T DIE IN THIS ONE!

Whew. Huge breakthrough in my Martian writing - I managed to write a story where not a tear will be shed and Mark doesn't even get so much as a hang-nail, yay! Oh, and it actually contains a tad bit of actual smut, another Martian-fic-writing-first for me!

Time Period: Post-Ares III return to Earth
Pairings: Mark Watney/Chris Beck
Warnings: Saccharine smut? Mark gets clever with a shoe? Astronauts in France? Outdoor Sex?
Rating: MA
Word Count: 2,500
Summary: Safely back on Earth, Mark and Chris seek to escape from the public eye by vacationing in the idyllic French countryside. Mark has something special planned and he isn’t going to let a missing corkscrew stand in his way.

On A03

This fic came about because of a Twitter conversation with [livejournal.com profile] impishtubist when she had a wine bottle that couldn't be uncorked the traditional way and it brought back memories of a holiday spent in Europe when my friends and I ended up corkscrew less in the Loire countryside.

update: I dug through some storage boxes and found the slides (yes, slides) that I'd taken on that trip. I digitized them so you can see that my story is pulled straight from my memory bank--sans the hunky astronauts and smarter solution to a missing corkscrew than we used. We pushed it through into the bottle which made pouring the wine rather difficult.

"I actually wrote a fic where mark doesn't die," best ao3 tag ever!! I can't wait to read this. ...I also was once in France without a cork screw and I'm sure the wine stains are still on that hostel ceiling. Awesome.

It seems that this is a common occurrence! We opted for the push through the cork method which worked but then we had to find a stick and poke at the cork to keep it from coming down the neck of the bottle as we were pouring. And of course we had to finish the bottle since we had no way of stoppering it :)
